It unlocks the Watchtower: a building that widens the city's vision and gives a small gold income. Its vision stacks with that of Walls in the same city (Fog of war).

When to research it

When you have border cities facing a rival and want to see attacks coming out of the fog sooner. The branch's third tier, Mining, lists this node as a prerequisite.
