Janissary

The Janissary is the elite infantry unlocked by the muhafaza doctrine The Hearth: it does not carry the line, it holds it.

The toughest infantry

Its defense is 4 and its HP 14 — noticeably higher than the Spearman's. Its attack is 2 and its attack vs. city 1: its value is not in attacking, it is in being able to hold a front alone for a long time. Breaking a city stays the Siege's job.

Starts with high discipline

Its discipline is 2 — above the Spearman's type-given base. A player who knows ocak gets an extra passive for their infantry (Spearman and Janissary); the two add up but do not exceed the 4 ceiling (Morale and rout). Higher discipline means a larger share of morale loss is held back — it makes the Janissary the unit that gets shaken later than the rest of the infantry in a long siege (Morale and rout, Experience and promotion).

Type advantage

Its toughness is not a coincidence: the Janissary also defends more strongly against Archer — full table in

Requires Iron

It carries the same prerequisite as the Siege: without an Iron deposit node in your region, you cannot produce it. The doctrine is a choice, Iron is a land requirement — without both being met at once, you cannot raise an elite army.

Cost and upkeep

Its cost is 10, its upkeep 1 — its upkeep is the same as other units, the price is paid in its build cost and at the Iron gate.

When to build it

For a player who has chosen the ocak doctrine and has Iron in their region, while an enemy is near. An opponent AI runs the same math: under threat it weighs the Janissary higher than the Spearman, while in peacetime it prefers the cheap front-line unit (Spearman) (The AI opponent).

Arriving by upgrade

A Spearman can be upgraded into this unit with gold: instead of building one from scratch, a veteran moves to the new weapon. The price and the conditions are on the Economy page.
