Mill
A Mill raises the city's food income purely by location: every Plains or Fertile land tile in the city's region adds a share, counting at most 2 tiles. A tile that is both plains and a bounty node still counts once. It is unlocked by Agriculture.
Its effects
- +1 Food for each Fertile land / Plains tile in the region (at most 2 tiles)
What it's for
What sets it apart from the Farm is that it has no base: a Farm gives a fixed share in every city, while a Mill gives nothing in a city with no plains or bounty node in its region. In return its set is wide — plains are the most common terrain on the board, so in a city on open plains a Mill reaches its cap easily.
Extra food carries the city to its threshold sooner; if the city is at its cap, the surplus flows to the granary (Cities and population).
When to build it
- In a city whose region holds several plains or bounty tiles. The city panel shows, next to the item, the share that city would get from its location.
- In a mountainous or forested city with no plains, spend the slot on another building instead — there a Foundry or an Workshop yields more.
The opposing AI builds the Mill once its city quota is full and no enemy is near (The AI opponent).
