Unlocks no building or unit, gives a passive

istihkam unlocks nothing; it carries a single passive, seen in the table above's Effects row, that takes effect the moment it is known. The effect grows the fortified defender's entrenchment share — the share that holds back morale loss rises by 1 above the base value (1) (Morale and rout).

The effect works only for the knowing player's own fortified defenders: if the owner of the fortified defender knows istihkam, the entrenchment share grows in that fight. Your istihkam does nothing against a rival's entrenchment when you attack. If a rival knows this node, the grown share shows up on the entrenchment line of the preview of a fight in which you attack their fortified unit (Research and the tech tree).

When to research it

This node is the prerequisite of the doctrine node The Hearth — if you want the muhafaza doctrine, you have to pass through this node. In a playstyle that defends often at the border and prefers to wait fortified, its effect shows itself early.
